Benioff zone

A planar zone of seismicity that dips into the Earth's mantle beneath an oceanic trench and volcanic arc, marking the subducting oceanic plate. Earthquakes within this zone are caused by the stresses of the descending slab. The angle of dip can vary from shallow to nearly vertical.
