Shadow zone
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003347
An area on the Earth's surface where seismic waves from an earthquake are not detected by seismographs. This phenomenon occurs due to the refraction and reflection of P-waves and S-waves at the core-mantle boundary. The P-wave shadow zone extends from about 104 to 140 degrees from the epicenter, while the S-wave shadow zone is larger, covering more than 104 degrees.
