Shadow zone

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008818

An area where sound waves or seismic waves are not detected due to refraction or reflection by atmospheric or geological layers. In meteorology, atmospheric shadow zones can occur for sound waves due to temperature inversions or wind shear, where sound is bent away from the surface. This phenomenon can explain why distant sounds are sometimes inaudible.
