Zone of silence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010339

An area on the Earth's surface where sound waves from a distant source are not heard, due to atmospheric refraction. This phenomenon occurs when sound waves are bent upwards by temperature inversions or wind shear, creating a region where the sound bypasses the surface before returning further away. It is often observed with loud explosions or thunder.
