Audibility zone
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003701
A region surrounding a sound source within which the sound is audible. Atmospheric conditions such as temperature inversions and wind shear refract sound waves, creating areas of silence separated by one or more distinct zones of audibility far from the source. A second zone of audibility for a large explosion may appear between 100 and 200 kilometers from the event.
