Shale ice

A form of ice that develops in thin, brittle layers, resembling flakes or shards of shale rock. It forms on the surface of water bodies, particularly in calm conditions or when water is supercooled. This type of ice is distinct from more consolidated forms like sheet ice or frazil ice.
