Shadow bands

Wavy, alternating light and dark bands that can be observed on the ground or on surfaces just before and after a total solar eclipse. These atmospheric phenomena are caused by the refraction of sunlight through turbulent layers in the Earth's atmosphere. They are a fleeting visual effect, lasting only a few seconds.
