Macrophyte
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006887
An aquatic plant large enough to be seen without a microscope, growing in or near water, either fully or partially submerged. The term encompasses a group of vascular plants, mosses, and large algae that are emergent, submerged, or floating. In ecotoxicology, macrophytes serve as bioindicators for monitoring water quality and the presence of pollutants, as they accumulate heavy metals and organic contaminants in their tissues.
