Stygobiont
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013602
An aquatic animal that is obligately adapted to living its entire life in subterranean groundwater habitats, such as caves and aquifers. These organisms exhibit specific adaptations, known as troglomorphism, including the loss of eyes and pigmentation, and enhanced non-visual sensory organs. Because they are confined to groundwater, stygobionts serve as sensitive bioindicators for assessing the quality and contamination of subterranean water systems.
