Stygophile
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013603
An aquatic animal that lives in and is capable of completing its life cycle within both subterranean groundwater and surface water habitats. Unlike stygobionts, these organisms are not obligately confined to underground environments and do not necessarily show extreme adaptations to darkness. Stygophiles can be found in the hyporheic zone, the region of sediment and porous space alongside a stream containing some groundwater.
