Phytochelatin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008956
A class of heavy metal-binding peptides produced by plants, fungi, and some algae in response to exposure to heavy metals. These peptides are synthesized enzymatically from glutathione and function in detoxification by chelating metal ions. They typically have the general structure (γ-Glu-Cys)n-Gly, where n ranges from 2 to 11.
