Metallothionein
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007257
A family of low molecular weight, cysteine-rich proteins that bind both physiological (zinc, copper) and xenobiotic (cadmium, mercury) heavy metals. These proteins are found in the cytoplasm of cells and are involved in metal homeostasis and detoxification. They contain a high proportion of cysteine residues, which form thiolate bonds with metal ions.
