Metalloenzyme
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013276
An enzyme that contains one or more metal ions tightly bound as a cofactor, which are directly involved in its catalytic mechanism. The metal ion often participates in substrate binding, electron transfer, or stabilization of transition states. Examples include carbonic anhydrase, which contains zinc, and cytochrome c oxidase, which contains copper and iron.
