Metal to ligand charge transfer transition

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007249

An electronic transition in coordination compounds where an electron moves from an orbital primarily localized on the central metal atom to an orbital primarily localized on a ligand. This process is often observed in the UV-Vis absorption spectra of transition metal complexes. It results in the temporary oxidation of the metal and reduction of the ligand.
