Peripheral tolerance

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008653

An immunological process that induces unresponsiveness in self-reactive T cells and B cells after they have matured and migrated from the primary lymphoid organs to the periphery. This mechanism prevents autoimmune reactions by deleting, inactivating (anergy), or suppressing lymphocytes that recognize self-antigens present in peripheral tissues. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a major contributor to peripheral tolerance by actively suppressing the activation and function of self-reactive effector lymphocytes.
