Immunological tolerance

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005688

A state of unresponsiveness of the immune system to substances or tissues that have the capacity to elicit an immune response. This active process prevents the immune system from attacking the body's own components (self-tolerance) and can be induced toward external antigens. Failure of self-tolerance results in autoimmune diseases, where the immune system attacks the body's own cells and tissues.
