Autoimmunity

The state in which an organism's immune system reacts against its own tissues or cells, which are normally tolerated. This phenomenon arises from a failure of self-tolerance mechanisms, leading to the production of autoantibodies or autoreactive T cells. It is the underlying cause of autoimmune diseases.
