Non-self

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008051

Any molecule or cell that is recognized by the immune system as foreign and distinct from the host's own components. The immune system mounts a response against these entities to eliminate them, distinguishing them from 'self' components to prevent autoimmunity. This recognition is mediated by specific receptors on immune cells that bind to foreign antigens.
