Non-specific adsorption

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008052

Adsorption of ions at an interface in which they feel only long-range Coulomb attraction or repulsion and form no chemical bond with the surface. Such ions keep their solvation shell and stay at least one molecular layer away from the surface, which places them in the outer Helmholtz plane. It contrasts with specific adsorption, where ions lose part of their solvation shell and sit at the surface in the inner Helmholtz plane.
