Ion-free layer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006104
An interphase at an interface such as an electrode surface in which the only ions present are non-specifically adsorbed ones, held by electrostatic attraction alone rather than by chemical bonding, so no specifically adsorbed ions occupy the inner layer. It is the simplest case of the electrical double layer, where the inner layer holds solvent molecules and the nearest ions sit at the outer Helmholtz plane.
