Ionic aggregates in an ionomer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006105

Regions within an ionomer where ionic groups cluster together due to electrostatic interactions, forming distinct microphases separate from the nonpolar polymer backbone. These aggregates are responsible for many of the unique physical and mechanical properties of ionomers, such as enhanced toughness and thermal stability. The size and distribution of these aggregates depend on the ion content and temperature.
