Specific adsorption

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011098

The adsorption of ions at an interface through short-range forces in addition to Coulomb attraction, such as van der Waals, hydrophobic or complex-forming interactions. Specifically adsorbed ions lose part of their hydration shell, sit in the inner layer next to the surface and can adsorb on an uncharged surface or on one of the same sign. They shift the potential in the inner layer and can reverse the sign of the surface charge.
