Outer Helmholtz plane

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008369

A plane in the electrical double layer marking the closest approach of non-specifically adsorbed, solvated ions to the electrode surface, drawn through the electrical centres of those ions. It lies farther from the electrode than the inner Helmholtz plane, which passes through the centres of specifically adsorbed ions that have lost part of their solvation shell. The diffuse layer begins beyond this plane.
