Autoantigen

A normal self-component, such as a protein or nucleic acid, that is recognized as foreign by the immune system, leading to an autoimmune response. These molecules trigger the production of autoantibodies and activation of self-reactive T lymphocytes. Autoantigens are central to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases.
