Autoimmune myositis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000978
A group of rare systemic inflammatory muscle diseases in which the immune system attacks muscle, causing inflammation, weakness and damage. The main forms are polymyositis and dermatomyositis, the latter with a characteristic skin rash, and myositis also occurs with malignancy or with other autoimmune diseases such as mixed connective tissue disease and systemic sclerosis. Autoantibodies such as anti-Jo-1, directed against an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, are associated with the group.
