Central tolerance

A process by which self-reactive lymphocytes are eliminated or inactivated during their development in primary lymphoid organs. This mechanism prevents the immune system from attacking the body's own tissues. It primarily occurs in the thymus for T lymphocytes and in the bone marrow for B lymphocytes.
