Anergy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000582
A state of functional unresponsiveness in lymphocytes, such as T or B cells, following exposure to a specific antigen. The cell remains alive but is unable to mount a productive immune response, such as proliferation or cytokine secretion, upon subsequent encounters with that antigen. This condition is a key mechanism for maintaining peripheral tolerance, preventing the immune system from attacking the body's own tissues by inactivating self-reactive lymphocytes that escape deletion in the thymus.
