Negative selection

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007806

The immunological process by which developing T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes that recognize and bind strongly to self-antigens are eliminated, primarily through apoptosis. This process occurs in the primary lymphoid organs, the thymus for T cells and the bone marrow for B cells. Negative selection is a primary mechanism for establishing central tolerance, preventing the maturation of self-reactive lymphocytes that could cause autoimmune disease.
