Autoimmune regulator

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000983

A transcription factor that controls the expression of a wide array of tissue-specific antigens within the medullary thymic epithelial cells of the thymus. This expression facilitates the elimination of self-reactive T-cells, a process known as negative selection, which establishes central immunological tolerance. Mutations in the gene encoding this protein cause the rare genetic disorder Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy-Candidiasis-Ectodermal Dystrophy (APECED).
