Biofilm
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001269
An aggregate of microorganisms in which cells are embedded within a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances. This matrix, composed of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and DNA, adheres the biofilm to a surface, which can be living tissue or an inert material. Biofilms exhibit a structured community, providing protection for the embedded cells from environmental stresses like antibiotics or disinfectants.
