Biofragmentation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001270
The degradation of a polymer into lower molar mass fragments through a biological process. This breakdown is caused by the action of enzymes or other agents produced by microorganisms, leading to scission of the polymer chains. Biofragmentation is a key step in biodegradation, preceding the assimilation of the resulting oligomers and monomers by microbial cells for their metabolic processes.
