Chain scission

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001849

The cleavage of a skeletal bond within a macromolecule's main chain, resulting in a decrease in the average molar mass of the polymer. This degradation process can be induced by external factors such as heat, radiation, chemical agents, or mechanical stress. Chain scission is distinct from the breaking of bonds in side groups, which does not alter the length of the polymer backbone.
