Polymer degradation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013417
A change in the chemical structure, physical properties, or mechanical characteristics of a polymer, resulting in a reduction of its performance. This process involves bond scission, crosslinking, or other chemical reactions initiated by factors such as heat, light, radiation, or chemical agents. The extent of degradation can be quantified by measuring changes in molecular weight, tensile strength, or optical properties.
