Detritus
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003092
Non-living particulate organic material, such as the remains of dead organisms and fecal matter, suspended or settled in water or soil. It serves as a food source for many organisms in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The decomposition of detritus by microorganisms releases nutrients back into the environment, and this material can also adsorb and transport chemical pollutants, influencing their fate and bioavailability.
