Periphyton

1. Microscopic underwater plants and animals that are firmly attached to solid surfaces such as rocks, logs, pilings, and other structures.

2. Sessile organisms that live attached to the surface projecting from the bottom in a freshwater aquatic environment.

3. (puh-RIF-uh-tawn) Microscopic plants and animals that are firmly attached to solid surfaces under water such as rocks, logs, pilings and other structures.
