Cetaceans

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001828

An order of fully aquatic placental mammals that includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises. As mammals, they are warm-blooded, breathe air through blowholes, and nurse their young with milk. In ecotoxicology, cetaceans are frequently studied as indicator species for marine pollution because their position at the top of the food web and their long lifespans lead to the bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants in their blubber.
