Bioconcentration
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001255
The net accumulation of a chemical substance directly from water into an aquatic organism, resulting in a higher concentration of the substance in the organism's tissues than in the surrounding water. This process occurs through passive uptake across respiratory surfaces and the body surface. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) is a ratio of the chemical's concentration in the organism to its concentration in the water at equilibrium.
