Semipermeable membrane device
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010734
A passive sampling device in which a semipermeable membrane, typically a lay-flat low-density polyethylene tube, fully encloses an acceptor phase such as the neutral lipid triolein. Dissolved hydrophobic organic compounds diffuse through the membrane and accumulate in the acceptor, so the device mimics bioconcentration of such contaminants in fatty tissue. It is deployed in water or air for weeks, giving a time-weighted measure of the freely dissolved concentration.
