Semipermeable membrane

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010733

A thin layer of material that acts as a selective barrier, permitting the passage of certain molecules or ions while blocking others. This selective transport is based on factors like particle size, charge, or solubility, and it drives processes such as osmosis and reverse osmosis. In laboratory settings, dialysis tubing made from regenerated cellulose is a common example used for separating macromolecules from smaller molecules and ions.
