Bioconcentration

The uptake of a chemical substance by an aquatic organism directly from the surrounding water, leading to a higher concentration of the substance in the organism than in the water. It is a specific type of bioaccumulation that excludes uptake from food. Bioconcentration factors are used to assess the environmental risk of drilling fluid components.
