Bioaccumulation

The process by which organisms absorb and retain substances, such as contaminants from drilling fluids, at a rate faster than they can excrete them. This leads to an increased concentration of the substance in the organism over time. Bioaccumulation is a key concern in environmental impact assessments of drilling operations.
