The lethal concentration 50, a measure of the toxicity of a substance, representing the concentration that causes death in 50% of a test population. In drilling fluids, it indicates the environmental impact of a mud system or its components on aquatic organisms. Regulatory bodies often specify minimum LC50 values for discharge permits.
