The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, a program under the Clean Water Act that regulates the discharge of pollutants from point sources into waters of the United States. In drilling operations, NPDES permits are required for offshore discharges of drilling fluids and cuttings. These permits set limits on toxicity and other parameters.
