Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002572
The total permanent magnetization present in a rock or sediment sample as collected, made up of a primary component locked in at formation and often one or more later overprints. The primary part is acquired as a rock cools through its blocking temperatures or as magnetic grains settle and align in sediment. Paleomagnetists isolate it by progressive demagnetization to recover ancient field directions.
