Natural remanent magnetism
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002512
The remanent magnetization that a rock or sediment carries in its natural state, before any laboratory treatment. It usually combines a primary component acquired at formation, such as thermoremanent magnetization on cooling or detrital magnetization on deposition, with later secondary components. Stepwise demagnetization separates these components, and the primary one is used in paleomagnetism to reconstruct past field directions and plate motions.
