Estuary

A semi-enclosed coastal body of brackish water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea. Estuaries are zones of mixing between freshwater and saltwater, subject to tidal influences. The sands deposited in estuarine channels and tidal bars can form high-quality reservoirs, while the associated organic-rich muds can act as source rocks or seals.
