Nekton

1. Organisms that are able to swim through the water column and move against currents. Nekton include fish, blue crabs, whales and rays.

2. Free-swimming organisms in aquatic ecosystems; unlike plankton, they are able to navigate at will (such as fishes, amphibians, and large swimming insects).

3. Organisms with swimming abilities that allow them to move actively through the water column and to move against currents.
