Signal peptide
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010853
A short, N-terminal amino acid sequence present in many newly synthesized proteins that directs them to specific cellular compartments, such as the endoplasmic reticulum or mitochondria. This sequence is typically cleaved from the mature protein after translocation. It acts as an address label for protein targeting within the cell.
