y-ion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012778

A type of fragment ion observed in tandem mass spectrometry, particularly in the collision-induced dissociation of peptides. It results from the cleavage of the peptide backbone at a peptide bond, retaining the C-terminal portion of the peptide and carrying the charge on the nitrogen atom. The mass of a y-ion is characteristic of the amino acid sequence from the C-terminus.
