Invariant chain

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006045

A non-polymorphic protein that associates with newly synthesized major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules in the endoplasmic reticulum. It prevents peptides and proteins within the endoplasmic reticulum from binding to the class II molecule's peptide-binding groove. After transport to an endosome, the invariant chain is proteolytically cleaved, leaving only a small fragment called CLIP in the binding groove.
